Harley FLT Shovelhead Starter Housing (OEM Casting #31498-79,  1980 Only)

According to Factory references, this starter housing was only used on the 1980 FLT. 

However, we have seen two variations.  The first variation uses the same mount hole machining style on both left and right bolt holes.  However, there is a second variation where the upper left side hole is counter-sunk with a step (starter gear side of housing.)  

Originally, this housing featured the machining style where both holes were machined exactly the same.  However, a previous user "converted" this housing to the second style by adding his own step using an over-sized bit.    

We don't know the significance of this step, and our Factory illustrations did not provide any clues.  But the included spacer was inserted into the countersunk portion of the hole, so it's possible this spacer served as either support or reinforcement.  But more research may be required.  That being said, the housing could be used with or without the spacer.

Otherwise, a nice Factory casting despite the modification.
